Suessical the Musical

Randolph Kids | Toronto, Canada | May 2025

Oh, the Thinks you can think!

From December 2024 to May 2025, I had the privilege of costuming a production of Suessical the Musical for Randolph Kids’ Mini Company. I went from measurements and drawings to sourcing, creating, and managing over 140+ costume pieces for the cast of 19. I labelled each costume piece with care, laundered their costumes, managed their presets during rehearsals and shows, and even jumped in to help with some hairstyling. Since I wasn’t seeing the cast every week, one of my biggest priorities was ensuring that whenever I was there, the children could entrust me with any of their concerns and, equally as important, their wildest costuming dreams (within budget, of course).

Over the course of six short months, I handled each interaction with care to ensure that the young actors were confident in their costumes and quick changes. Whether it was ensuring the perfect fit for Cat in the Hat’s giant custom-made hat, making Mayzie’s glamorous feather fan tail removable so she could dance with it as a prop,  or hairspraying Thing 1’s bright blue mohawk to be sky-high, it was amazing seeing each one of them come out of their shells and transform into their characters as soon as they hit the stage. The late nights of documenting receipts and finding feathers all around my apartment were worth it to see the costumes become the least of children’s worries. By the end of the run, some tears were shed, and my heart was full knowing how proud the kids were of themselves.
